Capital One Big Hassle Guarantee

So I got a letter from Capital One in the mail today….

This is a card I only really use when I’m doing business travel anyway so It’s pretty annoying that they are dropping it’s limit back down. So I call them up. 10min on hold and I get to read that paragraph to the first live human. I’m put on hold for an ‘Account Manager’ thirty minutes later they finally pick up the line. I give them my details again, read the paragraph this is what she tells me.

“Back in September of 2007 an error was made and 100,000 accounts had their limits increased in error. The error was not discovered until January 17th so the letters and adjustments are being sent out to those effected.”

Now it’s not like they bumped the card from $500 to $5,000 for me but the change in limit made this my #1 card for travel. I tell her such and she says “There is nothing that we can do.” Flat, dead pan answer.

I respond that if Capital One is the type of institution that A) is prone to making errors of this size to 100,000 of their accounts and B) a huge error like this will go unnoticed for months then I don’t have any faith in their company anymore. I’ll be canceling the card within the next month.

“Is there anything else I can help you with today?”

I fire back “Well you didn’t have any help for me after making me wait on hold for forty minutes, so no.” *CLICK*

I’ve got another Capital One card that I’ll be calling up and asking if they have made any errors to thousands of their customers and if I’m one of them.
