02.21Sending Myself a Ringtone
Having just switched to Verizon from Sprint I wanted to add some of my own ring tones to my phone. Well like any other authoritarian cell provider they don’t want you to do that. They want you to buy ring tones from them. However there is a way around it. You’ll have to have a phone and plan that will let you send picture messages. If you don’t you may be charged by the message or by the kilobyte you attempt to send. You’ve been warned. If you don’t know for sure that your plan supports this call them and find out. Attempt this at your own peril.
Now that I’ve scared away those who shouldn’t be trying this at all let’s see how it’s done. In the following video I use Audacity with the LAME MP3 encoder to trim and convert a song I want to use as my ring tone.
When you receive the email on your phone you can choose Options -> Save as Ringtone. From there it will be available in your ringtone/alert sound list. Have fun.
